DESCRIPTION:The Ruth Moufang Lectures will have their second iteration on July 13th and 14th\, 2023 in Darmstadt. We are happy to announce that our speaker will be Sarah Zerbes (ETH Zürich). The lectures will circle around the BSD conjecture and Euler systems. \nSarah Zerbes – An introduction to the theory of Euler systems\nAbstract: Euler systems are one of the most powerful tools for proving new cases of the Birch–Swinnerton-Dyer and Bloch–Kato conjectures. In my lectures\, I will give an introduction to the theory of Euler systems\, and give some examples of how to construct and where to find them. \n\n3rd lecture: Euler systems and the BSD conjecture for abelian surfaces\n\nAbstract: \nI will recall a series of recent works (variously joint with Loeffler\, Pilloni\, Skinner) giving rise to an Euler system in the cohomology of Shimura varieties for GSp(4)\, and an explicit reciprocity law relating the Euler system to values of L-functions. I will then explain recent work with Loeffler\, where we use this Euler system to prove new cases of the BSD conjecture for modular abelian surfaces over Q\, and for modular elliptic curves over imaginary quadratic fields.\nLectures 2 and 3 are aimed at mathematicians with a background in number theory.

We are happy to announce that our speaker will be Ariane Mézard (Sorbonne Université). \nAriane Mézard – Colloquium “A research project for Marguerite” \nAbstract: \nIn 2017\, Anna Novion\, screenwriter and director contacted me about her film then in writing\, "Marguerite's Theorem"*. She needed a PhD subject for her main character\, Marguerite\, a doctoral student in mathematics. It took me a little time to understand that my favorite subject\, deformations of Galois representations\, would not be suited to the role. I must admit that Goldbach's conjecture\, the subject chosen by Anna\, lent itself better to the game. In this colloquium\, I will present to you the notion of cinematic mathematics and the main results which passed the casting of this film.\n*will be released in Germany in 2024.

We are happy to announce that our speaker will be Ariane Mézard (Sorbonne Université). \nAriane Mézard – Seminars talks “Potentially Barsotti-Tate deformations rings I and II” \nAbstract: \nDeformation of Galois representations in an efficient tool in arithmetic geometry. Within the framework of p-adic Hodge theory\, it opened the way towards a p-adic Langlands program. In my first talk\, I will present briefly the general setting and open questions for some certain geometric Galois representations. In dimension two\, a computational approach\, in collaboration with X. Caruso and A. David\, allow us to formulate conjectures in the potentially Barsotti-Tate case.\n\nIn my second talk\, I will present a local model theory for moduli stacks of étale (Phi\,Gamma)-modules corresponding to 2-dimensional non-scalar tame potentially Barsotti-Tate Galois representations of the Galois group of an unramified extension of Qp. From this work\, in collaboration with B.\nLe Hung and S. Morra\, we derive explicit presentations of potentially Barsotti-Tate deformation rings\, in particular the proof of the Caruso-David-Mézard conjectures.

We are happy to announce that our speaker will be Ana Caraiani. \nAna Caraiani (Imperial College London) – Colloquium “Elliptic curves and modularity” \nAbstract: The goal of this talk is to give you a glimpse of the Langlands program\, a central topic at the intersection of algebraic number theory\, algebraic geometry and representation theory. I will focus on a celebrated instance of the Langlands correspondence\, namely the modularity of elliptic curves. In the first part of the talk\, I will give an explicit example\, discuss the different meanings of modularity for rational elliptic curves\, and mention applications. In the second part of the talk\, I will discuss what is known about the modularity of elliptic curves over more general number fields.

We are happy to announce that our speaker will be Ana Caraiani. \nAna Caraiani (Imperial College London) – Seminar talks \n“On the cohomology of Shimura varieties with torsion coefficients” (10:30-11:30)\nAbstract: I will survey results concerning the cohomology of Shimura varieties with torsion coefficients from the past few years. I will discuss the geometry of the Hodge-Tate period morphism\, including a recent generalisation of Igusa varieties to Igusa stacks due to Mingjia Zhang. Then I will contrast the original approach of computing cohomology with torsion coefficients due to myself and Peter Scholze\, which relies on the trace formula\, with more recent approaches due to Teruhisa Koshikawa\, Linus Hamann and Si Ying Lee\, who rely on deep local results. Finally\, I will explain how\, by combining the two approaches\, one can obtain a new instance of local-global compatibility.\n“On the modularity of elliptic curves over imaginary quadratic fields” (12:00-13:00)\nAbstract: I will survey how to prove the modularity of elliptic curves defined over the rational numbers\, as pioneered by Wiles and Taylor-Wiles and completed by Breuil\, Conrad\, Diamond and Taylor. I will also mention the case of elliptic curves defined over real quadratic fields\, more recently completed by Freitas\, Le Hung and Siksek. I will then explain why the case of imaginary quadratic fields is qualitatively different from the previous ones. Finally\, I will discuss joint work with James Newton\, where we prove a local-global compatibility result in the crystalline case for Galois representations attached to torsion classes occurring in the cohomology of locally symmetric spaces. This has an application to the modularity of elliptic curves over imaginary quadratic fields\, which also builds on recent work of Allen\, Khare and Thorne.
